Tell me your thoughts!

There has been a big push for GMO food labeling in grocery retailers nation wide. The California bill lost at the polls and I just got word that Montana is pushing for it.

If you remember, COOL (country of origin labeling) was determined to be unethical and would put certain other countries at a disadvantage.

Do you think the GMO bill is the same and puts certain producers at an unfair advantage or is it different? And as a consumer, do you real care that much if you are eating a GMO crop? And do you truly understand what a GMO is?

Word of first fire in Montana.

Just northeast of Livingston, MT- it started about 10pm on Friday. It has taken about 300 miles,  but is thought to be well contained.

I hope this is not a sign of what is to come this summer.

Just back from the first branding of the year…

And it seems that I always forget how strong calves are! I’m soar, bruised and exhausted.

I love every second of it.

Here is a question for you:

America has made a big push to stop “commercial” agriculture and start supporting locally grown product.

Do you think there is a place in this world for both? Submit your opinions!

Farm Bureau Sending Farm Bill to Capitol Hill

Today the Farm Bureau will send it’s proposed Farm Bill to D.C. This bill contains a mix of safety net and risk management options for producers that will save the government about $23 billion compared to continuing with the current farm bill.

The proposal’s aim is to:

  • Offers farmers a choice of program options.
  • Protects and strengthens the federal crop insurance program and does not reduce its funding.
  • Provides a commodity title that works to encourage farmers to follow market signals rather than making planting decisions in anticipation of government payments.
  • Refrains from basing any program on cost of production.
  • Ensures equity across program commodities.

It is expected that the Senate Agricultural Committee will begin writing a long term, comprehensive farm bill this month.
